Recreation
There’s always something to do in the Quad Cities! From our beautiful parks systems to our top-rated golf courses and our indoor ice skating arena to our outdoor state-of-the-art skateboard park, recreational activities abound. Golf Digest ranks the Quad Cities’ public golf course scene in the top 20 of 330 American cities, and first in affordability and accessibility.
Golf
With more than 25 golf courses in close proximity in the Quad Cities, there’s no reason not to hit the links. The Quad Cities was named in the top 20 as one of the best values for golf in the United States by Golf Digest Magazine in 2006. A round of golf, including cart, averages $30.
One of the top courses here is the Tournament Players Club Deere Run in Silvis, Ill. Golf Digest Magazine’s 2007/2008 Best Public Golf Courses to play has TPC Deere Run rated as the 82nd best public golf course to play in the United States.
The Davenport Parks and Recreation Department offers four public golf courses, designed and maintained to satisfy all types of golfing interests. Golfers may test their skills on one of our 9-hole courses, or select from one of our more challenging 18-hole courses. More than 120,000 rounds are played on these courses each year.
Bike Trails
Hop on your bike and within minutes, from many neighborhoods in town, you’ll be on a bike path. On both the Illinois and Iowa side of the Mississippi, you’ll enjoy spectacular river views as you ride alongside marinas, ducks, herons and an occasional pelican. The Illinois Great River Bike Trail winds from Rock Island north through the river towns of Port Byron, Fulton and Savannah, for a total of 60 miles. Deer peek out from the woods along the 13.5-mile Duck Creek Bike Path, which runs through the heart of Davenport and Bettendorf. Well-maintained, it’s a popular destination for everyone from seasoned bikers to tots on training wheels.
Parks and Pools
Summer and winter find you splashing happily, if that’s your wish. Contemporary slides and water features complement our public pools for summer fun, while multiple YMCAs offer indoor facilities year-round.
Our city park system is spectacular. Davenport’s Vander Veer Botanical Park – once called Central Park – is enjoying renovations to its turn-of-the-century elegance, with a promenade, period lighting, band shell, lighted fountain and pond. Contemporary playgrounds attract families to nearly all of our parks, and classes in everything from rowing to tennis attract all ages. Concerts and plays are performed throughout the area on park stages.
For camping, hiking and fishing, you can’t beat our county parks. West Lake Park offers 620 acres of camping, boating, fishing, and picnicking, while Scott County Park offers 2,000 wooded acres for camping and hiking. Swimming is fabulous at both sites, as well!
Boating
Boaters put in their small and large craft in late spring to enjoy a full season on the Mississippi and Rock Rivers. To enjoy boating as a spectator sport, relax on a shoreline bench just off the bike path!
